EN: Is at least 50% of the cocoa in store brand products certified according to Fair Trade, Utz, Rainforest Alliance or similar systems, and does the brand have the objective to increase this to 100% before 2016?
NL: Is tenminste 50% van de cacao in eigen merk producten gecertificeerd volgens Max Havelaar, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance of gelijkwaardige systemen, en heeft het merk de doelstelling dit te verhogen naar 100% voor 2016?
DE: Wurde der Kakao der Eigenmarke mindestens zu 50% entsprechend Sozialstandards wie Fairtrade, Utz Certified oder Rainforest Alliance zertifiziert? Wurden Ziele formuliert, um vor 2016 eine hundertprozentige Zertifizierung zu erreichen?


Regarding sustainability, Fairfood indicates various ‘priority issues’ in the cocoa sector of which the gravest one is obviously bonded child labour, which is still current in Ivory Coast, West Africa [1]. Furthermore cocoa farmers and workers often have insufficient access to social infrastructure, e.g. education, health care. Another problem in the cocoa sector is the low prices the farmers receive. Tropical Commodities Coalition (TCC) mentions various standards aiming to improve both environmental and social conditions of cocoa farmers from mainly developing countries. In reference to Supermarket Chains Labour Conditions Question 3, we accept all certification schemes as evaluated by the Tropical Commodity Coalition for cocoa. Chocolate brands like Verkade already show it is possible to source 100% certified cocoa.

Albert Heijn shows the ‘best practice’ by promising 100% certified cocoa for all its store brands before the end of 2015 and having achieved 82% in 2011, see the Sustainability Report 2011, p.5.
