Next: Dairy Climate Change Question 4.

Has the brand (company) already reduced or compensated its absolute 'own operations' greenhouse gas emissions by at least 10% in the last 5 years?

References and Guidelines

This question is generic, and is applicable to the brands in most sectors that we rank. For the Dutch and German version, and for references and guidelines, see the second part of the Apparel & Footwear Climate Change Question 2.

Please note that due to the high percentage of methane emissions (which account for 40-50% of the total dairy “greenhouse gas emissions”, see also Dairy Climate Change Question 5) in the dairy sector, we ask for "greenhouse gas emissions" instead of only "carbon emissions". Carbon emissions only take CO2 in consideration, while greenhouse gas emissions is an "umbrella term" which takes methane, CO2 and nitrous oxide, etc. in consideration.

However, because methane emissions are hard to measure (http://www.wur.nl/nl/nieuwsagenda/archief/nieuws/2011/Methaanuitstoot.htm), only reporting on CO2 emissions is considered as sufficient enough at the moment.

Best Practice: Danone has reduced its carbon emissions with 27,5% between 2008-2011.
