Generic Questions

In this section, you will find the list of generic questions that are applicable in more than one (future) sector. The questions are categorized into three areas: Carbon Emissions (climate change), Ecology and Labour Conditions. Clicking on a question heading will provide you with more background information, guidelines and possible jurisdiction for the question.

Questions about Carbon Emissions

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 1:
Is there a policy for the brand to minimize, reduce or compensate carbon emissions?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 2:
Has the brand (company) disclosed the annual absolute carbon footprint of its 'own operations'?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 3:
Has the brand (company) disclosed the annual absolute carbon footprint of its 'own operations' (Scope 1 & 2) and has the brand already reduced or compensated 10% of these emissions in the last 5 years?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 4:
Has the brand (company) set a target to reduce its absolute ‘own operations’ carbon emissions by at least 20% within the next 5 years?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 5
Is at least XX% of the electricity used by the brand (company) generated from renewable resources, such as wind or solar energy?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 6
Does the brand (company) generate its own renewable energy through eg solar panels or wind mills?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 7:
Does the brand (company) have a policy and reports on tangible results to reduce / compensate carbon emissions generated from the production chain (Scope 3)?

Does the brand (company) publish the annual carbon footprint that also covers the major suppliers, and does the brand have an effective policy in place to reduce these carbon emissions?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 9:
Has the brand (company) disclosed the annual absolute carbon footprint of all transport to and from the consumer (=including returns)?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 10:
Has the brand (company) reduced the absolute carbon footprint of all transport from and to the consumers?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 11:
Has the brand (company) reduced the average carbon emissions per package as send out to consumers?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 12:
Does the brand (company) offer consumers the option to send their orders 'climate neutral' through credible carbon compensation programs?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 13:
Does the brand (company) send at least XX% of the order volume as 'climate neutral'?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 14:
Does the brand (company) send its entire order volume as 'climate neutral'?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 15:
Does the brand (company) take concrete policy measures to reduce the return rate?

Generic Carbon Emissions Question 16:
Has the brand (company) achieved a return rate of XX% (for clothing and shoes XX%) at highest?

Is at least XX% of the brand (company) consumption of energy derived from renewable sources?

Questions about Ecology

Generic Ecology Question 1:
Does the brand (company) have clear objectives to minimize waste, by reducing, re-using and recycling, and does the brand annually report the results?

Generic Ecology Question 2:
Version - Food: Does the brand have clear objectives to minimize the environmental impact of packaging, by reducing, re-using and recycling, and does the brand annually report on these results?

Generic Ecology Question 3:
Version - General: Does the brand have clear objectives to minimize the environmental impact of packaging, by reducing, re-using and recycling, and does the brand annually report on these results?

Generic Ecology Question 4:
Does the brand have a policy to seek out suppliers and/or service providers that conduct their business in environmentally responsible ways and does the brand provide concrete examples of this policy?

Generic Ecology Question 5:
Does the brand (company) publish its annual material, water and/or land footprint, or alternatively respective footprints for each sold product, and does the brand have an effective policy in place to reduce the overall environmental impact of material, water and/or land use?

Generic Ecology Question 6:
Does the brand have clear objectives to minimize the environmental impact of packaging and does the brand already show clear 'best practices' regarding more sustainable packaging?

Questions about Labor Conditions and Human Rights

Generic Labor Conditions Question 1:
Does the brand (company) purchase [ingredients] from sources (plantations) that are certified to e.g. have no child labor and no forced labor, and provide a better living standard for the farmers and workers who produce the [ingredients]?

Generic Labor Conditions Question 2:
Does the brand (company) have a published list of direct suppliers, that have collectively contributed to more than 90% of the purchase volume?

Generic Labor Conditions Question 3:
Does the brand (company) have a supplier Code of Conduct (CoC) which includes the following standards: No forced or slave labor, no child labor, no discrimination of any kind and a safe and hygienic workplace?

Generic Labor Conditions Question 4:
Does this CoC include at least two of the following workers rights: 1. to have a formally registered employment relationship 2. to have a maximum working week of 48 hours with voluntary and paid overtime of 12 hours maximum 3. to have a sufficient living wage?

Generic Labor Conditions Question 5:
Does this Code of Conduct include the right for workers to form and join trade unions and bargain collectively; and in those situations where these rights are restricted under law, the right to facilitate parallel means of independent and free association and bargaining?

Generic Labor Conditions Question 6
Does the brand (company) annually report on the results of its labor conditions policy?

Generic Labor Conditions Question 7
Is the brand (company) a member of a multi stakeholder initiative (MSI), wherein independent NGO’s or labor unions are represented, that collectively aims to improve labor conditions and that carries out independent audits? Or does the brand (company) significantly purchase its supplies from factories certified by such MSI’s?
